An AI training data licence lets a model developer use a defined copy of your data to train or evaluate models, under terms you negotiate. You do not hand over your systems and you do not usually give up ownership. Here is how these deals are typically structured, in plain language.

Licence vs sale

In a licence, you keep ownership and grant specific rights: which data, for what use, for how long, and whether others can also license it. In an outright sale, ownership transfers. For operating companies, licences are far more common because you still need the data.

What buyers look for

Volume, years of history, consistent structure, English language, and data that shows a full workflow from start to finish (a ticket and its resolution, a project from kickoff to close). See what types of company data sell.

Rights checklist before you apply

  1. Do customer or client contracts restrict secondary use of data you hold for them?
  2. Is any data owned by a third party (for example, a BPO handling a client's calls)?
  3. Does your privacy policy allow anonymized data to be used for other purposes?
  4. Are there union, employment or confidentiality obligations to consider?

Contact centres and agencies often hold data on behalf of clients. That data may still be licensable, but only with the client's permission.
